Data gaps in prevalence rates of mental health conditions around the world: a retrospective analysis of nationally representative data

October 10, 2025

A new global study shows that for many countries, including Brazil, mental health data for children and teens are missing or outdated. Despite more research since the 2000s, many mental disorders are still not recorded in national surveys, especially in lower‑income regions and younger age groups. This lack of information makes it hard to plan services and care for young people. This study calls for better, coordinated efforts to collect reliable data on child and adolescent mental health, so policymakers in Brazil and beyond can make smarter, evidence‑based decisions.
